Repeat Prescriptions over holiday period

During the Easter holiday period the Practice will be closed on the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th April 2006. Please hand in your repeat prescription requests in plenty of time, to ensure that you do not run out of your medication over the Easter holiday period.

NHS Repeat Dispensing Scheme

Do you get the same medicines regularly?
Do you use the same Pharmacy?
Would you like to get your repeat prescriptions from your Pharmacy, rather than getting them from your Doctor each time?

If the answers to the above questions are YES please read on to find out more about this new service.
  • Repeat dispensing is a new way of getting your medicines or other items you use regularly without asking the Doctor for a prescription each time, improving medicine use and reducing wastage.
  • Your Doctor will make sure it is safe to give your medicines in this way. If your Doctor wants to review your medication before giving you a prescription, he/she will advise you about this.
  • Your Doctor will give you an ‘authorising’ repeat dispensing prescription (form with ‘RA’ printed on it) and a number of repeat dispensing issue forms (forms with ‘RD’ printed on them). Your Doctor will only sign the ‘authorising’ repeat dispensing prescription. This form is valid up to a year. You should take this signed prescription (the ‘RA one) and the repeat dispensing issue forms (an ‘RD’ form) to the Pharmacy to get your first lot of medicines or other items.
  • It is recommended that you ask the Pharmacy to look after your repeat dispensing issue forms for you.
  • You will need all of your repeat dispensing forms to get your medicine or other items. If you lose any, you will have to go back to your Doctor.
  • When you need more medicine or other items go back to your Pharmacy with one of your repeat dispensing issue forms. Or, if they are looking after the forms for you, ask them to ‘repeat dispense’ your medicines or other items.
  • When your repeat dispensing issue forms run out and you still need the medicines or other items, you should go back to your Doctor for more repeat dispensing issue forms before your medicine runs out. Your Doctor or his/her staff will have to print these (they cannot handwrite these prescriptions).
  • You do not have to use repeat dispensing, you can continue collecting prescriptions the way you do now.
  • Before you start the Scheme your Doctor will ask you to sign a repeat dispensing agreement, to allow your Pharmacist and Doctor to exchange information about your treatment. All information given by you to your Doctor or Pharmacist will be confidential.
  • You need to return to the same Pharmacy to get all of the other repeat issue forms dispensed. If you move or change address or cannot use the Pharmacy you chose, you will have to return to your Doctor for a new ‘authorising’ repeat dispensing prescription and more repeat dispensing issue forms to change to another Pharmacy.
  • Your Doctor or Pharmacist will advise you how often you need to go to the Pharmacy.
  • You need to tell your Pharmacist if there has been a change in your condition or if you are taking other medicines (to check it is safe to take these with the repeat dispensed medicine).
  • Your Pharmacist will help you if you have any problems. They may ask you whether your medicine is helping you and may contact your Doctor about this. Do not worry, your Doctor or Pharmacist will not make any changes without talking to you.
  • The Pharmacist does not have to give you everything on your repeat dispensing issue form, especially if you have plenty of one or more items left at home, but your Pharmacist may ask you or your representative some questions to check what is still needed.
  • Do not sign all the prescriptions at the same time, only fill in Part 1 or Part 2 and sign Part 3 on the reverse of the form, when you give a form to the Pharmacy to get more medicines or other items. If the Pharmacist is looking after your issue forms for you, then they will get you to sign when you go to pick up your next supply.
  • You have to pay a prescription charge (or charges) each time you get a prescription dispensed, unless you are already exempt or your circumstances change. You may find that a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) could save you money. Ask your Pharmacist for details, he/she may also be able to give you an application form (FP95).
  • If you wish to check if you can get free prescriptions, read Part 1 of the prescription form. If any of the statements apply to you on the day you are asked to pay for your prescription, you don’t have to pay a prescription charge (or charges).
