Regulation reform brings safer care for patients

Healthcare Services will be safer for patients thanks to new proposals published in response to the fifth report of the Shipman Inquiry. The plans are designed to ensure that all health professionals are competent and provide high quality, safe care, and that complaints about staff are investigated thoroughly.

Proposals include:
  • Better support for patients who want to register concerns about professionals and measures to ensure they are taken seriously.
  • More rigorous checks on references and qualifications when health professionals are recruited.
  • Senior Doctors such as GPs and Consultants will be tested to ensure they are fit to practice every 5 years.
  • Regulatory Bodies such as the General Medical Council will be independent of Government and will be led by an equal partnership of professionals and members of the public.
  • In fitness to practice cases, all regulators will adopt the civil standard of proof (on the balance of probability) instead of the current standard, which requires allegations to be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
  • NHS Trusts will have to appoint a medical examiner to sign off all death certificates filed by doctors.

Coughs & Sneezes spread diseases (Department of Health Campaign)

Simple hygiene steps can prevent the spread of colds and flu, and will also play a major role in slowing the spread of pandemic influenza.

Hygiene Steps to follow:
  • Always carry tissues.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Use disposable tissues and throw them away afterwards in a bin.
  • Clean your hands regularly, especially after coughing and sneezing.
Many people don’t realise that a cold or flu virus can survive on the skin for several hours and thus spread to others, but they can easily be removed by regular hand washing.
