BEING OPEN POLICY (COLCHESTER PCT)

Colchester PCT have made a public commitment to be open to patients who have been unintentionally harmed as a result of their treatment, as part of a National drive led by the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA). A new ‘being open’ Policy has been put in place to help staff communicate with patients and to let patients know what they can expect from the Trust. The Policy ensures that if a patient is harmed owing to a mistake in their healthcare, they will receive an apology, be kept fully informed as to what has happened, have their questions answered and know what is being done in response. The NHS treats many people safely and effectively every year, but modern healthcare is complex and mistakes can happen. Better communication with patients, their families or those who care for them is a vital part of the process in dealing with errors in treatment. By speaking openly and honestly to patients who have been harmed because of a mistake, the staff and professionals working in the Colchester PCT area can help reduce the trauma they might suffer and learn valuable lessons that will go towards ensuring that mistake does not happen again. The Colchester PCT ‘being open’ Policy is in line with the NPSA’s National Being Open Policy, which was launched in September 2005.
