Better Services for Pregnant Women

Mothers-to-be will have a range of birthing choices from the NHS by 2009, according to a new framework published. 'Maternity Matters, Choice, access and continuity of care in a safe service' will provide a 'gold standard' to maternity services, providing women and their partners with the opportunity to make informed choices throughout pregnancy, birth and during the postnatal period. The framework sets out a new national choice guarantee and aims for all women to have the choice of:
  • How to access maternity care - women will be able to go directly to a midwife or via a doctor.
  • Type of antenatal care - women will be able to choose between midwifery care or care led by both doctors and midwives.
  • Place of birth - depending on their medical history and circumstances, women and their partners will be able to choose between home births, or giving birth in a midwifery unit, or with midwives and doctors in hospital.
  • Place of postnatal care - women will be able to choose how and where to access postnatal care.

9 Oxford Road Alcohol Project

The 9 Oxford Road Project is now in its 14th year of operation, offering a comprehensive Day Programme for people with wide-ranging drink problems who are concerned about their use of alcohol and are seeking to make positive changes. They offer advice, information and a variety of support groups and therapies, which include a women’s group and an evening group for those with daytime commitments. Programmes are flexible and are agreed on an individual basis. Although clients need to be alcohol free at the time of attendance to be part of the day programme, they may be able to help clients who are awaiting detox with individual support, but are unable to provide detoxification. Clients can self-refer or be referred by their Doctor/Clinician. This service is free to residents of Essex.

For further information on the 9 Oxford Road Project or to book an assessment, telephone 01206 546854 between 10.30 am and 5.30 pm, Monday to Friday. An answerphone is available outside of these office hours.
