Important information for patients with heart valves or congenital heart disease about antibiotic use prior to dental and other medical procedures

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (www.nice.org.uk) has recently issued guidance which affects patients with heart valves or congenital heart disease. Antibiotics prior to dental procedures are no longer recommended following a recent review of the evidence for their use in preventing endocarditis. Further information is available via the Practice Website and the following link:

Measles outbreak in Switzerland and MMR Vaccination

For those patients lucky enough to be planning a trip to Switzerland for Euro 2008, you need to know that due to a recent outbreak of measles in Switzerland (and a smaller outbreak in Austria) the Medical Authorities there now recommend that anyone travelling to the country who was born after 1970 should make sure they have had 2 doses of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine, to ensure they are protected against measles prior to travel. Further information is available via the Practice Website and the following link:

Measles Outbreak in Switzerland (www.parsonsheath.co.uk/euro2008mmr.doc)

Sadly the incidence of measles in the UK is also on the rise, patients who are not travelling should also check their records, as they too would be wise to complete their vaccination course.
