Offering you more healthcare choice (new Website)

A new website bringing together information on all hospitals and treatment centres in England is being launched this Summer, alongside increased choice for patients about where they are treated. Members of the public will be able to search a wide range of information through the new site, from details of how to access services to local data about patient surveys and quality of services. Comparative information about dentists and GPs will also be included. The site will also help you assess your health risks and join discussion groups with people with the same condition. By the time the site is launched in the Summer, patients needing elective treatment such as a hip replacement will be able to choose from more than 200 hospitals and treatment centres. By the end of 2008, they will be able to choose from any hospital that meets NHS standards and costs. Currently, patients are offered a choice of four local hospitals, 34 foundation trusts and 15 independent sector providers. Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt said: “Genuinely empowering people to exercise choice is essential to creating an even better, more responsive NHS. This new super Website takes patient choice one more step forward and will develop and expand over time to provide a comprehensive resource for patients”.
